A deep dive into Umaru Doma’s character
If you like watching slice of life anime genres then you might have heard about an anime series called Himouto or Umaru-chan. I watched this series years ago and watched it again recently because I missed it so much.
There are so many reasons why I love this anime but before mentioning any of them let me introduce you to the main character of this show, Umaru Chan.
Umaru chan is also called (Himouto) by her older brother. I researched what he meant by that and it meant worthless lazy bum sister! I laughed loudly after reading it, there couldn’t be a better description. I will add that word to my Japanese passive aggressive insults vocabulary and say it to my sister one day lol. Her formal name in school is Umaru Doma.
Who is she?
She is a popular 16 year old high school girl who is cute, smart and kind. Her classmates and other students in her school see her as the perfect flawless girl. She never skips school, has perfect scores on all her exams and is always ready to help others. She is a great swimmer and a great pianist. In general, she is good at sports. However, they never met the other side of her personality (which I relate to more).
She never portrays herself as perfect nor does she wants to be seen as one, this is how other people see her and she tries to live up to that standard and not let anyone’s down.
Her favorite free time activities
When she gets back home after a long school day, she wears her hamster hoodie which indicates that fun time has started, she turns herself into a chibi form when she’s acting like her normal self . All she wants to do is play video games, drink her cola and eat her favorite snacks.
Also, she likes to read her favorite weekly manga one piece , ahem excuse I meant to say Jun piece lol.
She owns 2 little cute hamsters that she loves dearly. She likes to watch pet videos with her hamsters. Instead of teaching her pets cool tricks like most normal pet owners do, she hopes that one day she will be able to teach her hamsters to bring her cola and potato chips trick!
Her favorite pastime activity is to watch anime and movies while snacking and drinking cola.
She likes to be spoiled by her older brother, he’s like a father figure to her. He cooks her dinner, cleans the house and grocery shops for both of them. She depends on him a lot, she’s so lazy that she doesn’t really help her brother at all unless she has guests coming over.
She’s an optimistic person that believes that every contest she enters she will win. She likes to compete in gaming tournaments. She is not a social person but she has a best friend called Ebina chan, she is her classmate and they both live in the same apartment building.
The downside of her character
The only thing I don’t like about her is when she wants something, she throws tantrums like a little kid to pressure her older brother until he gives in and buys whatever she wants. I mean she is 16 she is already way too old to be acting like that. Nonetheless, I think it’s part of her irresponsible side because everyone in her life thinks she’s responsible and she can only show her true self infront of her brother only.
For the first time in my life I have realized that being far from perfect is much more realistic and fun, she is worried about other people judging her that is why she feels pressure to be perfect.
