A Little Backstory:

When I was a child I always liked magic and fictional stories. My mind was full of imagination, I could believe the most unbelievable stories if they were good enough. In the early 2000s, I used to like watching an anime series called Magical Doremi.

Back then I was in elementary school, I used to go play outside in the afternoon after school with my cousins and friends. I remember that I wanted to watch this show so badly. But it aired at an inconvenient time and I would always miss it. I could only watch it on tv and I couldn’t watch it on the internet, I don’t even think we owned a computer until 2004.

It’s like enough time has passed that I completely forget that it even existed. But, I am glad that I have found it again. I am also glad that we all can watch it whenever it is convenient for us nowadays.

Long story short, I grew up without watching it. It always lingered in my head for years. Watching it now as an adult made me feel somewhat emotional. I might be a little dramatic but for people who have not experienced the same situation might not understand me. It feels so nostalgic.

Magical Doremi Review:

Magical Doremi which is also known as Ojamajo Doremi is an anime series supposed to be for a younger audience but it is entertaining even for adults.

If you enjoy lighthearted anime with life lessons, or magical characters like witches and made up creatures with interesting backstories you will enjoy this a lot.

This series features the daily life of Doremi Harukaze, the pink haired girl who always ends up in unfortunate situations and calls herself “the world’s unluckiest pretty girl”. We also get an introduction of her “imperfect family”. Her parents always fight about little things.

Her little sister Pop is in kindergarten, she behaves and speaks like a grownup. For that reason Doremi’s parents deem Pop as the responsible one. Obviously, Doremi doesn’t have a dysfunctional family, it was made that way for comedic purposes.

How It All Started:

Doremi was reading a book about witches because she wanted to become one. The book described the witch appearance as the following:

A witch always wears gloves, she has red eyes and a big nose. Witches hate children! This description matched Majo Rika, the owner of Maho Dou shop.

Doremi called her a witch and when a witch’s identity is revealed she’ll transform into a witch frog. The only way that the witch transforms back to her original form is by turning the kid who got her exposed into a witch.

It’s an interesting concept and I liked how creative this series is in terms of storytelling. However, becoming a witch is not an easy task. It’s a long journey, witches have to start off as apprentices and work their way up until they eventually become witches. If you want to know more about how to become a witch, read this post.

She quickly made a very strong friendship with her classmates Hadzuki Fujiwara and Aiko Senoo. Who not only became witches and helped her during her adventures but also became her best friends.

What I find truly magical about it, is that it was aired in the late nineties and early 2000s. At that time not everyone knew how to use computers and that part was covered in this series.

The Magical Doremi series contains 51 episodes. But there are more seasons that played as a sequel of the main story. If you liked this series and want to binge watch all the other series, they are in the following order:

  • Magical Doremi series (1999)
  • Magical Doremi Sharp series (2000)
  • Magical Doremi Sharp Movie (2000)
  • More! Magical Doremi series (2001)
  • More! Magical Doremi secret Movie (2001)
  • Useless witch Doremi Kaboom! Series (2002)
  • Magical Doremi Na-i-sho series (2004)
  • Ojamajo Doremi: Owarai Gekijou ONA (2019)
  • Looking for Magical Doremi Movie (2020)

I hope you enjoy watching it and let me know your thoughts about what character you liked and disliked. I appreciate all types of feedback and it helps me to deliver better posts. Thank you for reading.
